How to apply retinol
without irritation
You used retinol for three evenings, then your skin started to feel tight, go red or peel? That's the classic scenario when you try to go fast without adjusting your routine. Retinol can transform skin texture, but only if you respect its pace.
How to apply retinol without irritation, right from the start
The first instinct: think tolerance before performance. With retinol, going too fast often slows everything down — irritated skin becomes more reactive, loses comfort and sometimes forces you to stop completely.
Always start on completely dry skin, in the evening. Apply a small amount over your whole face. A pea-sized amount is enough for the entire face. Using more won't get you to smoother skin any faster — it mainly increases the risk of stinging and redness.

The right pace changes everything
What matters isn't using retinol every evening, it's finding the frequency your skin truly accepts. For first-time use, once or twice a week is plenty for two to three weeks. If all goes well, you can move to every third evening, then every other evening.
Some skin reaches near-daily use. Others do very well with two or three applications a week and still get great results. There's no medal for the skin that tolerates the most.
The mistakes that most often trigger irritation
Retinol often gets the blame unfairly, when irritation actually comes from a build-up. An overly active routine, a stripping cleanser, an acid exfoliant added on the same evening can be enough to tip your tolerance over the edge.
The most common mistake: wanting to fix several problems at once. Retinol, AHA, BHA and acidic vitamin C in the same week — on paper it looks thorough, in reality it's often too much. Skin that feels hot or peels isn't working harder; it's signalling that it's overwhelmed.
Which products to pair retinol with
Retinol's best allies are hydrating and repairing products — ceramides, panthenol, hyaluronic acid, centella asiatica.

On retinol evenings, it's best to leave out strong chemical exfoliants if your skin hasn't yet built up good tolerance. Vitamin C isn't necessarily off-limits in an overall routine, but if you're very reactive, separate the actives: vitamin C in the morning, retinol on some evenings.
A simple routine that really works
Using retinol without consistent sun protection sabotages part of the work. Retinol doesn't like half-hearted sun routines — daily sunscreen is essential, even when it's grey.

If you're just starting out, aim for clarity. In the evening, cleanse gently, wait until your skin is dry, apply a small amount of retinol, then finish with a moisturiser. On non-retinol evenings, focus on hydration and soothing.

- A small amount (pea-sized) is enough for the whole face — more won't speed anything up.
- Start at 1-2 times a week and increase gradually according to your skin's tolerance.
- The sandwich method (moisturiser-retinol-moisturiser) really helps sensitive skin get started.
- Never use retinol on the same evening as a strong AHA/BHA exfoliant.
- Daily SPF is a must — without it, results on dark spots and marks stall.
