Layering niacinamide
and retinol without irritation
Skin marked by spots, post-acne marks or uneven texture often needs both regulation and renewal. Well dosed and introduced methodically, niacinamide and retinol can help your skin without pushing it to its limits.
Why combine niacinamide and retinol?
Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, is one of the most versatile actives in skincare. It helps regulate excess sebum, visibly minimise the appearance of pores, support the skin barrier and improve the evenness of your skin tone.
Retinol promotes cell renewal and addresses concerns such as texture, pigmentation spots, fine lines and persistent blemishes. Retinol acts as a renewal accelerator, while niacinamide helps the skin stay comfortable during this phase.

Can you layer them on the same evening?
Yes, in many cases — the idea that they're incompatible is outdated. If your skin is already used to retinol, apply a niacinamide serum before your retinol treatment, then finish with a moisturiser.

If your skin is sensitive or new to retinol, it's better to start by alternating: niacinamide every morning or on retinol-free evenings, with retinol kept to two evenings a week.
The order of application for an effective routine
After a gentle cleanse, apply your products from lightest to richest: cleanser, niacinamide, retinol, repairing cream. For sensitive skin, try the sandwich method: a thin layer of cream, the retinol, then a second light layer of cream.
How often should you start?
Two retinol applications a week are enough to start with. Keep to this rhythm for 2–3 weeks, then move to every third evening if your skin stays calm.
Combinations to avoid on retinol evenings
Avoid piling on exfoliants (AHAs, BHAs, PHAs, scrubs) on the same evenings as retinol. Acidic vitamin C can also be kept for the morning or retinol-free evenings if your skin is sensitive.
“Alternating lets you treat several concerns without weakening your skin.”
