A minimalist
Korean skincare routine in 4 steps
A cleanser that respects your skin barrier, well-chosen hydration and sun protection applied consistently can do far more for your skin than a shelf of ten products. K-beauty doesn't have to mean a ten-step routine.
The principle
Why simplify your skincare routine?
Adding more serums doesn't necessarily mean more results. On the contrary, piling on exfoliants, retinol, vitamin C or fragrance can encourage stinging, redness, inflamed breakouts and dehydration.
A short routine has a very real advantage: you can see what actually works. If a formula doesn't suit you, it's easier to pinpoint the cause. You also cut down on waste and are more likely to stay consistent — and consistency matters more than a highly technical product used twice and then forgotten at the back of a drawer.
“The minimalist approach suits almost every profile, but what goes into it changes with your needs.”
Step 1
Cleanse without stripping
Cleansing prepares your skin for the rest of your routine, but it should never leave it uncomfortable. In the morning, a rinse with lukewarm water may be enough if your skin is dry or reactive. In the evening, always cleanse to remove sunscreen, sebum, pollution and make-up.

Korean double cleansing is still worthwhile if you wear long-wear sunscreen or make-up, but it isn't compulsory every evening if you don't feel the need.
Step 2
Add water and strengthen the skin barrier
In a short routine, a hydrating toner, essence or serum can become your signature step. These light treatments bring comfort without heaviness and let you layer hydration delicately — a principle much loved in Korean skincare.

One well-tolerated formula is enough. Apply it to slightly damp skin, then move on to your cream before the water has fully evaporated.
Step 3
Choose just one targeted active at a time
This is where your routine becomes truly personalised. A well-chosen active can transform the look of your skin, as long as you don't try to treat everything at once. Start with one priority concern for six to eight weeks.

Very sensitive skin doesn't need a powerful active straight away — a formula with centella or panthenol can be the best targeted treatment for a few weeks. Calmed skin often responds better to treatments afterwards.
Step 4
Hydrate at night, protect in the morning
Cream isn't just for dry skin. Even oily skin benefits from suitable hydration, often in the form of a light gel-cream. In the morning, sun protection is the non-negotiable step: it prevents dark spots from darkening and limits the impact of UV on skin ageing.

In practice
Example routines by skin type
For combination, oily or blemish-prone skin: a gentle cleanser in the morning if needed, a niacinamide serum, then a light sunscreen. In the evening, cleanse, apply your targeted active, then finish with a non-comedogenic gel-cream.
For dry, sensitive or reactive skin: keep mornings very simple — lukewarm water or a gentle cleanser, a hydrating toner, cream and SPF50+. In the evening, a gentle cleanser, a soothing treatment, then a richer cream. Wait until your skin is stable before adding an exfoliant or retinol.
To avoid
Mistakes that complicate an otherwise simple routine
The first mistake is changing your whole routine as soon as a spot appears. Keep a gentle base and test new products one at a time, ideally for two weeks before adding another.
The second is confusing oily skin with sufficiently hydrated skin. Skin that shines can still lack water. Finally, don't turn minimalism into deprivation: a hydrating mask or occasional exfoliation can have their place if they meet a specific need.

- A short routine makes it easier to identify what really suits your skin.
- 4 steps are enough: cleanse without stripping, hydrate deeply, one targeted active, protect in the morning.
- One active at a time, tested for six to eight weeks, gives better results than piling them on.
- Daily SPF remains the non-negotiable step, however simple your routine.
