The Korean double cleansing routine
a how-to guide
Long-wear sunscreen, a made-up complexion, skin that produces a lot of sebum: some residues just won't budge with a single cleanser. Two complementary textures to remove make-up, cleanse without stripping and leave your skin truly ready for the rest of your routine.
Why the Korean double cleansing routine works
The principle rests on a simple idea: oil dissolves oil. The first cleanser, an oil or a balm, lifts away sunscreen filters, make-up and excess sebum. The second, water-based cleanser then removes the last water-soluble impurities.
The goal is never that squeaky-clean feeling — that signal means the hydrolipidic film has been weakened too much.
The Korean double cleansing routine: the two steps
Step 1: remove make-up with an oil or balm
On dry skin with dry hands, apply a small amount and massage gently for 30 to 60 seconds, without rubbing. Then add a little water — a good formula emulsifies into a milky texture before rinsing off easily.

Step 2: cleanse with a gentle water-based texture
After rinsing off the first cleanser, move on to a gentle gel or foam. Lukewarm water, never hot, and 20 to 30 seconds of massage is enough.

Should you double cleanse morning and evening?
In the evening, yes, in most cases — if you wear SPF or make-up, it's an excellent habit. In the morning, it depends: dry skin will sometimes appreciate a simple rinse, while oily skin will prefer a light gel.
Which duo to choose for your skin
Oily skin: a light oil followed by a gentle gel. Dry skin: a melting balm, then a low-foaming milk. Sensitive skin: a short, soothing, fragrance-free formula. Combination skin: massage the T-zone a little longer and stay gentle on the cheeks.
Mistakes that sabotage results
Choosing a cleanser because it foams a lot — foam is not a sign of performance. Scrubbing hard to "feel it working" keeps redness going. Sticking with a balm that blurs your eyes or leaves a permanent film.
Don't confuse cleansing with treatment — AHAs, BHAs or niacinamide do their job in the leave-on products that follow, not in the cleanser itself.
