How to choose a
gentle face cleanser
The right cleanser doesn't leave your skin “stripped perfectly clean”. It leaves it clean, comfortable and ready for the rest of your routine — especially if you swing between shine, breakouts, redness or a tight feeling.
The right reflex
How to choose a gentle face cleanser for your skin
Before reading the promises on the bottle, look at your skin straight after cleansing. If it feels tight, hot or turns red quickly, it isn't necessarily asking for a richer product: it may simply need a less stripping cleanser. If it shines a few hours after washing, an overly powerful cleanse may also be to blame.
Overly aggressive cleansing can weaken the skin barrier, increase sebum production and make the actives you apply afterwards less comfortable. The right choice is all about balance: removing sebum, impurities and sunscreen without mistreating your skin.

Dry or dehydrated skin will appreciate a cream, milk or low-foaming gel texture with glycerin, hyaluronic acid, panthenol or ceramides. Sensitive or reactive skin prefers short formulas built around centella asiatica, allantoin or oat, with a pH close to that of the skin.
For combination to oily skin, the temptation is to choose the most purifying cleanser possible. Yet a gentle gel with a physiological pH is often more suitable for everyday use, with a regulating active such as green tea, niacinamide or a low dose of salicylic acid.

If your skin is acne-prone, “gentle” doesn't mean “ineffective”. A gentle cleanser limits the aggression that keeps inflammation going, while still properly removing excess sebum. When breakouts are very inflamed, it's best to be cautious with grainy scrubs and very acidic cleansers.
Formulation
Ingredients to look for and ones to watch
A cleanser is rinsed off, so it doesn't need to be loaded with powerful actives to perform well. Its priority is the quality of its cleansing base: gentle surfactants — often coconut derivatives, glucosides or amino acids — capture impurities without aggression.
Hydrating and soothing ingredients are a real bonus: glycerin, panthenol, aloe vera, centella asiatica, ceramides or allantoin. They reduce that uncomfortable feeling after rinsing, especially on sensitive skin.
Morning & evening
The ideal texture also depends on your routine
In the morning, a light cleanse is often enough: a simple rinse with lukewarm water can suit dry or reactive skin, provided your evening routine is done properly. In the evening, long-wear sunscreen or make-up sometimes calls for a double cleanse — a cleansing oil or balm, then a gentle water-based cleanser.
“Double cleansing isn't compulsory every evening — the goal is never to pile on steps.”

Water temperature matters too. Very hot water worsens redness and dehydration. Opt for lukewarm water, massage the product in gently for about thirty seconds, then pat your face dry with a clean towel.
Warning signs
How to tell if a cleanser is too harsh
The feeling of clean skin shouldn't resemble immediate tightness. If you feel tightness, stinging, dry patches or an urgent need to apply cream, your cleanser is probably too stripping, or you're using it too often.
By contrast, a cleanser that suits you leaves your skin supple, clear and calm. When testing a new formula, change just one product at a time and use it for one to two weeks to clearly identify what your skin tolerates.
