Why apply an essence
before a serum?
Does your skin feel tight after cleansing, soak up your serum in seconds, then still seem dehydrated an hour later? The problem isn’t necessarily your serum. Applying an essence before a serum can make a real difference to comfort, radiance and your skin’s ability to make the most of the actives in your routine. This signature K-beauty step doesn’t just add one more product: it prepares the skin for more targeted care.
The order of your products matters, especially when you’re trying to calm redness, limit breakouts, fade dark marks or get a lasting glow. But an essence isn’t essential to every routine, nor compatible with every combination of actives. Here’s how to tell whether it belongs in yours.
Why apply an essence before a serum?
An essence comes right after cleansing, and after a toner if you use one. Its texture is usually fluid, lighter than a serum and more cushioning than a very watery toner. Its role is to quickly rehydrate the skin’s surface layer and create better conditions for applying the products that follow.
Freshly cleansed skin can lose water quickly, especially if it’s dehydrated, sensitised by exfoliating actives or exposed to sun, wind and air conditioning. A humectant essence, formulated for example with glycerin, hyaluronic acid, panthenol, beta-glucans or centella asiatica, helps hold on to that water. The result: skin looks more supple and your serum spreads more easily, without friction.

It’s not about “driving” a product deep into the skin, as if the skin were a sponge. It’s rather a matter of layering consistently. A light formula goes on first, then a more concentrated, targeted serum, followed by a cream that helps limit water evaporation. This progression respects textures while avoiding needlessly diluting your products.
Essence and serum: two complementary roles
An essence is often thought of as a prep and hydration step. It can also bring interesting actives, such as ferments, green tea, rice, propolis or snail mucin extracts. Its formula is generally designed to be applied generously, morning and night, with a fresh, light feel.
A serum, on the other hand, addresses a more specific concern. It can target dark spots with vitamin C or regulating actives, pores and breakouts with niacinamide or salicylic acid, or signs of ageing with retinol and peptides. Its concentration of actives isn’t automatically higher than an essence’s, but its function is more specific.
So the two products don’t systematically replace each other. If your skin is balanced and your serum already hydrates enough, an essence can be a sensory pleasure rather than a necessity. On the other hand, if your skin lacks water, marks easily, turns red or struggles with anti-blemish treatments, it can become the step that makes your whole routine more comfortable.
Applying an essence before a serum: the right technique
After washing your face with a gentle cleanser, pat it dry without rubbing. If you use an exfoliating or balancing toner, apply it first at the frequency that suits your skin. Then pour a few drops of essence into your palms and press gently onto your face and neck. Hands are often more practical than a cotton pad: they avoid waste and limit unnecessary friction, especially on sensitive skin.
Don’t let the essence dry completely. Just wait a few seconds, until the skin’s surface is no longer very wet, then apply your serum. Your skin should stay supple and slightly fresh, but not dripping. If you layer products on a face that’s too wet, some very active serums can spread more and become more irritating.
Always finish with a cream suited to your comfort level. In the morning, add a broad-spectrum sunscreen. This last step is what protects the results of your anti-spot, anti-ageing and anti-blemish care. Without sun protection, a routine targeting hyperpigmentation will have a much harder time delivering on its promises.
Should you apply several layers of essence?
The successive-layer technique, sometimes called the “7 skin method”, can bring real comfort to dehydrated skin. Still, it isn’t mandatory. One or two thin layers are plenty for most skin types, especially if you follow with a serum and a cream.
In a hot or humid climate, notably in Réunion, too many layers can feel sticky or make combination skin shine faster. In that case, choose a light essence and a single-layer application. The best routine is the one you enjoy enough to use regularly, without overload or discomfort.
Which pairing for your skin?
For dry, dehydrated or weakened skin, a soothing essence rich in humectants pairs very well with a serum containing ceramides, panthenol or hyaluronic acid. Look for gentle textures, fragrance-free if your skin reacts easily, then seal in hydration with a comforting cream.

For combination to oily skin prone to breakouts, the essence should stay light, non-occlusive and soothing. Centella asiatica, green tea, heartleaf or propolis can be great allies. You can then apply a niacinamide serum to help balance sebum and improve the look of pores. If you use a BHA, avoid also layering an essence loaded with acids in the same routine.

For post-acne marks and uneven skin tone, a hydrating essence prepares the skin for a vitamin C serum in the morning or a renewing treatment at night. Here, consistency and sun protection do more for radiance than piling on powerful actives. Irritated skin produces inflammation more easily, which can keep marks around.
For a retinol routine, the essence can act as a comfort cushion. Choose a minimalist, hydrating and soothing formula, then introduce retinol gradually. If your skin stings, peels or stays red, reduce how often you use retinol rather than adding more and more products.
Mistakes that limit your results
The first mistake is choosing an essence only because it’s trendy. A fermented formula can be brightening and pleasant for many skin types, but reactive skin won’t always like the same ingredients. Read the formula, watch your tolerance and introduce one new product at a time.
The second mistake is confusing dehydration with dry skin. Oily skin can lack water and benefit from an essence without needing a rich cream. Conversely, dry skin needs both water and lipids to feel comfortable again.
Finally, don’t overload an already active routine. If you use vitamin C, AHA/BHA and retinol, the ideal essence will often be the simplest one: hydrating, soothing and free of extra exfoliants. Effectiveness isn’t measured by the number of bottles on the shelf, but by how stable your skin stays over the weeks.
When an essence can be optional
You can absolutely skip the essence on rushed mornings if your serum and cream are enough to keep your skin comfortable. It can also be less relevant when you use a very watery serum already rich in humectants, or when the climate makes any layering feel too heavy.
On the other hand, it becomes especially useful after a short night, during a sensitive phase, after well-managed exfoliation or whenever your skin looks dull and thirsty. At Haru & Bom, the idea isn’t to make you follow a ten-step routine: it’s to build a sequence of products that truly responds to what your skin is showing today.

- An essence goes on after cleansing (and toner), right before your serum, to rehydrate the skin and make the next steps easier.
- Essence and serum are complementary: one preps and hydrates, the other targets a specific concern.
- One or two thin layers are enough; in a hot, humid climate, a single light layer is often better.
- In an already active routine (vitamin C, AHA/BHA, retinol), choose a simple essence with no extra exfoliants.
- In the morning, sunscreen remains the step that protects the results of your skincare.
Observe your skin for a few days after adding an essence. If it’s more supple, less uncomfortable and your serum goes on better without shine or pilling, you’ve found a useful step. The right order is never a rigid rule: it’s the one that keeps your skin calm, hydrated and glowing, day after day. Discover the K-beauty selection →
